- Harlem’s Rattlers and The Great War
Geert De Proost General Representative of the Government of Flanders to the U.S. kindly invites you to a presentation of Harlem’s Rattlers and The Great War The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality by Prof. Jeffrey T. Sammons The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and a reception. Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War combines the “fighting focus” of military history with the insights of social commentary, it reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th. The book describes as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers’ experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equality. Dr. Alan L. Gropman, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the National Defense University, describes Harlem’s Rattlers as “the definitive history of the 369th Regiment in World War I…[and] unlikely to be superseded.” Jeffrey T. Sammons is a professor of history at New York University, where he has taught since 1989. He will be introduced by Hamilton Fish V, publisher of the Washington Spectator and grandson of Captain Hamilton Fish III late of the 369th Regiment. Tuesday, November 17, at 6:30 PM (doors at 6:15 PM) Flanders House The New York Times Building 620 Eighth Avenue, 44th Floor (between 40th and 41st Street) New York, NY 10018 The Government of Flanders, Belgium will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War with many special events during the period 2014-2018. - Sexy Taco/Dirty Cash – San Fran Street Food in Harlem
by Kysha Harris @schopgirl Just when you thought you were getting into the groove of La Bodega 47 Social Club, owner Brian Washington-Palmer, has something else up his sleeve. He definitely continues to keep it sexy and, this time, a little dirty too. Sexy Taco/Dirty Cash returns the space on the corner of Lenox Avenue and 118th street to the open facade of it’s now “grandfather”, Native. Dressed with larger-than-life posters of pin-up girls perched atop tacos with a pinch of Blaxplotation, this new space is serving up San Francisco style Mexican inspired food (Sexy Taco) and an adventurous, quirky cocktail program (Dirty Cash). We recently stopped by on a busy night of their soft opening to embrace the new incantation and to burn a little dirty cash on some sexy tacos and more. We had to start with guacamole and chips as the official litmus test for any Mexican inspired eatery. It was chunky, creamy and perfectly seasoned. A squeeze of fresh lime at the end hit the palate just so. We caught Washington-Palmer as he sat down to his meal of a huge taco salad with pulled chicken, black beans, pico de gallo, queso, guacamole, sour cream and shredded lettuce. It was a beast for $16. He generously offered us to sample it as we waited for our tacos. We know we will return for that salad. Perfect for a light meal for two…with a couple of cocktails. We kept it simple with our first visit sharing crispy fish tacos with chipotle crema and ground beef tacos playfully lined with Rice-a-roni (…the San Francisco treat!). Washington-Palmer is still playing with the menu, but we are sure his food happy place isn’t far away. With delivery, lunch, brunch and dinner on the menu, feeling sexy won’t just be reserved for your boudoir. Now get that dirty cash ready to make it rain!
