Lyn-Genet’s Kitchen has a healthy recipe for us to try at home. Create their top selling PLT: portobello and pico de gallo. YUM. Mushrooms are a rich source of vitamin D, a necessary nutrient for immune function.

Ingredients: 2 medium portobello mushrooms, stem cut off 1/2 cup flour 2 eggs, lightly beaten 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs 1/2 teaspoon thyme sea salt and pepper to taste avocado oil for frying

Directions: Peel the skin off of the portobello. Dredge the portobello in the flour, dip them in the egg and then into a mixture of the panko breadcrumbs, salt and pepper. Pour a 1/2 inch of oil in a cast iron skillet on medium high. Fry until crispy brown.

Family Friday

Let’s have #FamilyFriday fun as we embark on a Historic Harlem Scavenger Hunt with The Boys and Girls Club of Harlem! This scavenger hunt will expose students to the rich history and culture that exists within their local neighborhoods (Central Harlem and Sugar Hill/Hamilton Heights). Get the kids together and explore from home here.

Play board games and card games. Video games are fun but playing actual board or card games is a good way to bring everyone in the house together and lift everyone’s spirits. For children, games can help them develop a stronger sense of individuality and creativity. If you do not have games in your home, click this link, http://ow.ly/gjnO50zqUjI , for the nine boardless, cardless games you can play as a family.

#FamilyFridays is brought to you by Boys & Girls Club of Harlem.  Visit bgcharlem.org/blog/categories/resources for virtual academic enrichment programming, homeschooling tips, wellness advice and more.

Service Saturday

Sylvia’s Restaurant and Melba’s has been doing good for the neighborhood! They’re brought much-needed comfort to Harlem Hospital, donating dozens of meals to health care workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak. Both iconic Harlem restaurants joined the #HarlemFoodPantry Grocery Pick Up in partnership with Harlem Park to Park to supply free groceries for Harlem/Upper Manhattan hospitality and restaurant workers affected by the shutdown.

The Communities for Healthy Food at West Harlem Group Assistance team works hard daily to make sure that the food hub is ready to service residents. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the food hub serves as an integral part of their response action as a Food Bank for NYC. Making dry food products available to residents is part of what they offer. Not registered with CfHF? No problem. They will serve any and everybody as long as they are able to. Visit whgainc.org for more information.
